Results of the study demonstrate that the circadian clock in the fetal rat suprachiasmatic nuclei develops gradually. At embryonic day 19 (E19), i.e., 4 days before delivery, the rhythms in expression of canonical clock genes Per2 and Bmal1 were absent and the clock developed just before birth. Expression of the clock gene Nr1d1 was rhythmic at E19 in absence of other clock gene expression rhythms and was thus likely driven by maternal cues instead of the core clockwork. The result suggest a molecular mechanism of how the rhythmic maternal cues entrain the developing fetal clock in the suprachiasmatic nuclei in vivo
