Anhydrous crystalline polymorphs of calcite, vaterite and aragonite, were synthetized as the first step of a research project dedicated to the study of kinetics of lime carbonation. Lime is one of the oldest nanomaterials produced and used by mankind as a binder in mortars for brickwork, stonework, rendering and plastering.[1] In the recent years lime has become an important compatible material in the field of cultural heritage conservation for composing repair mortars compatible with the existing historic materials. The investigation of the kinetics and polymorphs occurred during CaCO3 carbonations in lime mortars will be crucial for the evaluation of these materials. In this work, the formation of vaterite and aragonite was studied in different reaction conditions. The synthesis of these crystalline CaCO3 polymorphs was performed through the reaction between aqueous solutions of CaCl2.2H2O and K2CO3 and was inspired by work published elsewhere [2]. The identification and characterization of calcite polymorphs were studied using spectroscopic techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy (RS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD)) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
