Ce livre, consacrée à la pensée de Jan Patočka par un philosophe tchèque contemporain dont les recherches se sont orientées plus particulièrement vers la phénoménologie, se penche dans sa prémière partie sur la préoccupation majeure qu’est l'élucidation de la donation du monde comme tel et du mode d'être originaire de l'homme au monde de la vie. Ce thème marquant, révélateur de la profonde influence d'Edmund Husserl et de ceux qui, autant en France qu'en Allemagne, en ont entrepris une lecture critique, reçoit ensuite l'éclairage d’un second foyer systématique avec une série d’études sur la conception patočkienne de l’historicité de l'existence humaine, plus ouverte à l'inspiration heideggérienne. Le monde naturel et l'histoire sont les deux grands thèmes de la pensée de Patočka, thèmes qui entretiennent une relation de tension caractéristique de l'ensemble de son œuvre, tels – pour reprendre l'expression de Paul Ricœur – les deux foyers d’une ellipse.

The book is a serie of essays on two major themes of the philosophy of Jan Patočka. The elucidation of the givenness of the world and of the originary modes of being of man in the world in the theme of the first part of the book which follows the critical transformations of the husserlian reflections in Patočka. The second part of the book concerns the historicity of man and the European History where Patočka is more open to a heideggerian inspiration. The natural world and history are so in a specific tension like the two foci of the ellipse as Paul Ricoeur noted. The moment of a dissidence and of a heresy is a caracteristic feature of the human freedom in Patočka. The freedom and transcendence of the spirit, despite of its radical distance to the given world, means for Patočka no "extramundain" position but rather a possibility of the engaged existence having impact on the practical life.
