Hexavalent chromium causes damage of DNA. We investigated 73 occupationally exposed workers and 71 control individuals for chromosomal aberrations as well as for tentative modulating role of polymorphisms in DNA repair genes on chromosomal damage with respect to the blood concentration of chromium. No apparent increase in chromosomal damage was recorded in chromium-exposed welders in comparison with controls, but genetic make-up in DNA repair genes may increase susceptibility toward averse efect of chromium.
