Gap-junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), well-established biomarkers of tumor promotion, were affected by cyanobacterial extracts in in vitro experiments with rat liver epithelial cells. Since the observed effects of cyanobacterial extracts did not correlate with the content of known hepatotoxic cyanotoxins, and the pure toxins (microcystin, cylindrospermopsin, lipopolysaccharides) affected neither GJIC nor MAPKs, the effects were most likely induced by not-yet characterized chemicals of produced by cyanobacteria. These mechanisms (inhibition of GJIC, activation of MAPKs) and chemicals may thus contribute to the tumor promoting activity of toxic cyanobacteria.
