Ca occurred mainly in the exchangeable form while Mg, Na and particularly K, Al and N occurred inside cells. Hummock species with a higher cation exchange capacity (CEC) accumulated more exchangeable Ca2+, while the hollow ones with a lower CEC more Na+. Intracellular N and P were consistently lower in dying shoot parts, indicating the possibility of N and P reutilization. Where S. magellanicum formed mixed patches with S. angustifolium, it had the intracellular N content about 40% lower than if grew alone. This indicates unequal competition for N in those co occurring species. We assume that the high CEC enables sphagna to retain immediately the cationic nutrients from rainwater. This represents a mechanism of temporal extension of nutrient availability to subsequent slow intracellular nutrient uptake.
