This study evaluated the isolation and detection of E. coli O26, O111 and O157 inoculated into vegetable samples using immunomagnetic particles. Standard cultivation and immunomagnetic separation (IMS) procedures were compared. It was found that immunomagnetic particles very efficiently concentrate E. coli cells, detecting significantly more bacteria then with standard cultivation procedures. E. coli O111and O157 were detected in 93-100 % of inoculated samples using IMS, but only 36-53 % samples after plating were found positive. In the case of E. coli O26, 93 % samples after direct plating were positive compared with 100 % positive samples after IMS; the number of presumptive colonies was significantly higher after IMS.
