Influence of environmental factors on the rotifer assemblage in an artificial lake.

Seasonal changes of a planktonic rotifer community were evaluated in a Czech eutrophic reservoir in relation to 46 environmental variables. Data of rotifer abundances from three growing seasons during 1993 - 1995 were analysed. The seasonal dynamics of rotifers in all three studied years were characterised by two distinctive seasonal aspects. The spring peak, with maximum year densities and species diversity and the later summer-autumnal peak (or several lower peaks) of about half the density of the spring one. The separation between these two peaks coincided with the decline of phytoplankton and development of the clear-water phase in this reservoir. In redundancy analysis, the rotifer species-abundance data were related to all measured environmental variables. Date, abundance of Cyclops vicinus, total nitrogen, primary production, surface temperature and density of heterotrophic nanoflagellates were identified as the most important explanatory variables.
