Pravidelné kontakty překračující hranice přirozených geografických celků lze předpokládat od vzniku stálých sídel a komunikací mezi nimi - tedy od neolitu. Tato centrální místa, která existovala po celý pravěk a středověk, jsou překryta moderními městy. Na příkladu českých lokalit v době železné je doloženo, že každá sídlištní jednotka měla přístup k nadregionálním kontaktům.

Since the beginnings of permanent settlements and their mutual contacts, from the Neolithic onwards, regular contacts can be presumed surpassing the borders of natural geographical zones. Central places existed during the whole prehistory and the Middle Ages, and are now hidden under modern towns. The case of Bohemian sites, namely of the Iron Age, is used to document this hypothesis.
