It occurs from Morocco and Iberian Peninsula in the west as far as the Middle East. Recently, it has been found that the Mediterranean Gecko has an unusually low genetic variation all around the Mediterranean coast. We showed in our study that the situation is different in the inland of the Levant region, where the gecko possesses surprisingly high genetic variation and differentiation. It shows the region to be original for the species, the centre of the radiation from where the geckos spread across the whole Mediterranean in the recent period presumably due to the human activities.
