Ve stati je podán krátký přehled problematiky působení inovativních výzkumných organizací v České republice. Jsou zde zmíněny nejstarší české tradice v universitním vzdělání i výzkumu i dědictví posledních desetiletí – jeho důsledky pro výzkum. Jsou rovněž identifikovány hlavní okolnosti vzniku „nových šampiónů“ v současnosti.
