It has negative effect on different mammalian cell lines in vitro and it is able to affect the thyroid hormone system as well it might be able to influence the androgen/estrogen hormone system in vivo. In our previous study we have observed that TBBPA is able to induce apoptosis of testicular cells and changes in the expression of genes playing important roles during spermatogenesis. Moreover, we observed that certain effects can be transmitted to the second generation. In this study we examined in more detail the effect of low concentration of TBBPA (35μg/kg b.w.) on reproductive parameters of male mice in vivo with the focus on the protamines, the most abundant sperm nuclear proteins, and on the sperm DNA integrity. In our study, TBBPA has induced changes in sperm protamination, number of TUNEL positive sperm and serum testosterone level. Protamines recently have been implicated in the epigenetic marking of sperm chromatin in human and mouse spermatozoa. Thus, changes in sperm protamination induced by TBBPA, may explain the previously observed second generation effect.
