An idea of using laser plasma as a source of high-energy ions for the purposes of proton therapy is based on the efficient ion acceleration observed in laboratory and numerical experiments on the interaction of high-power laser radiation with gaseous and solid targets. Up to now the experiments were able to demonstrate the production of ion beams with the maximum energy as high as several tens of MeV [1]. There are some experimental indications that currently available lasers can produce proton beams with the energy of about 100 MeV. Theoretical and computer simulation results indicate that several hundred MeV or even GeV protons can be expected from the interaction of multi-TW or PW laser pulses with different targets [2].
