Evropští reformátoři ve zpěvu spatřovali efektivní nástroj náboženské výchovy, ideologické agitace i reformační propagandy, který lépe než mluvené slovo dokázal roznítit srdce věřících. Většina z nich proto tvorbě a šíření duchovních písní věnovala náležitou pozornost. Z předmluv kancionálů je zřejmé, že vedle samotného textu písní jim ležela na srdci i atraktivní výzdoba. Podle slov Luthera podněcovala krásná výzdoba věřící ke zpěvu a činila zpěv duchovních písní činností nadmíru příjemnou. V českých zemích publikovala nejvíce kancionálů jednota bratrská. Výzkum bratrských knih se však vydavatelskými strategiemi v rovině typografie ani ideovým plánem výzdoby bratrských knih dosud až na výjimky nezabýval. Příspěvek představí nejnovější zjištění komparativního průzkumu a ikonografické analýzy výzdoby tří foliových edic bratrských kancionálů (1564, 1576, 1581). Cílem příspěvku je ověřit tezi, zda tento typ tisků plnil funkci důležitého vizuálního komunikačního média, které mělo bratrské věřící utvrzovat ve víře a zároveň posilovat jejich důvěru v Boží pomoc. Tato teze bude verifikována na příkladu akantových iniciál v těchto kancionálech. Při jejich analýze se ukázalo, že při jejich použití jednota bratrská vycházela z ideového konceptu zbožné mnemotechniky Martina Bucera a Kalvínova pojetí přírody jako druhé Boží knihy. Překlad anotace Singing spiritual songs together was an essential part of the religious practice of Protestant believers, along with reading Scripture and listening to sermons. European reformers saw singing as an effective tool for religious education, ideological agitation, and Reformation propaganda, which could stir the hearts of the faithful better than the spoken word. Most of them therefore paid due attention to the creation and dissemination of sacred songs. It is clear from the prefaces of the canticles that, in addition to the text of the songs themselves, they were also concerned with attractive decoration. In Luther's words, the beautiful decoration encouraged the faithful to sing and made the singing of spiritual songs an exceedingly pleasant activity. In the Czech lands, the Unity of Brethren published the most canticles. However, research on Brethren books has not yet dealt with the publishing strategies in terms of typography or the ideological plan for the decoration of Brethren books, with a few exceptions. This paper will present the latest findings of a comparative survey and iconographic analysis of the decoration of three folio editions of the Brethren's canticles (1564, 1576, 1581). The aim of the paper is to test the thesis that this type of prints fulfilled the function of an important visual medium of communication, which was to confirm the faith of the Brethren believers and at the same time to strengthen their trust in God's help. This thesis will be verified through the example of the acanthus initials in these canticles. In analyzing them, it becomes clear that in using them, the Unity Brethren drew on Martin Bucer's ideological concept of devotional mnemonics and Calvin's concept of nature as a second book of God.
