Our work demonstrates the preparation of silica-monolithic capillary columns (100 μm i.d. x 150 mm)
by hydrolysis of tetramethoxysilane in the presence of polyethylene glycol and urea under acidic conditions
at elevated temperature. Details of the column manufacturing process as well as SEM pictures are
presented. Prepared silica support was covered by novel phosphonium ionic liquid trioctyl (3/4-vinylbenzyl)
phosphonium chloride. Synthesis route of monomer and its NMR spectra are presented. Prepared
stationary phase was bonded by radical polymerization of IL with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate
to silica monolithic column. The synthetized column with phosphonium IL stationary phase presents multiple kinds of retention mechanisms – it works in HILIC chromatography, reversed-phase chromatography and in ion exchange
chromatography. Separation properties are demonstrated on various sample mixtures and evaluated.
