The stress concentration in the vicinity of bi-material notch tip is often responsible for a crack initiation and thus for a failure of whole component. The conditions of failure for the cases of bi-material notches are usually evaluated using generalized fracture mechanics approaches based on singular stress terms only. This is due to the values of corresponding stress singularity exponents, which generally differ from 1/2 (those of a crack in homogeneous material). Even so, in some cases of geometrical or material combinations of bi-material notches the questions, which cannot be answered on the basis of the singular stress terms only, still remain. These specific questions are usually related to the cases of bi-material notches with only one singularity or to the cases where the singularity dominates only in a very small region around the stress concentrator tip. For this kind of cases, the stress distribution resulting from the semi analytical approaches considering singular terms only can differ from the numerical results, or sometimes a crack initiation direction is difficult to estimate. Therefore both singular and non-singular stress terms are taken into account in order to describe the stress distribution more precisely and in order to make the estimation of crack initiation conditions more reliable.
