Mikulčice represents an archaeological phenomenon of fundamental importance for the understanding of the lifestyle and identity of the highest strata of society in Mojmírid Moravia. No other central 9th-century site north of the middle reaches of the Danube has such a concentration of evidence of power, wealth and Christian faith as Mikulčice. All this reflects the basic function of the Mikulčice-Kopčany agglomeration as the leading power-political centre of the Moravian Empire. The connection of Mikulčice with the Mojmir family is very probable. The question is, however, to what extent we are able to match the extensive grave goods from the church cemeteries and the luxury artefacts from the settlement contexts with specific layers and personalities of the Moravian nobility.
