While H. mantegazzianum has short-term persistent soil seed bank and seeds persist in soil more than three years this one of H. sosnowskyi has transient soil seed bank and all seeds germinate immediately after stratification. The European distribution of these two Heracleum species is also distinct, with H. sosnowskyi confined to tne northern and eastern parts of the continent and H. mantegazzianum having the centre of the invaded distribution range in central a nd western Europe. Nevertheless the germination characteristics of H. sosnowskyi indicate that invasion by this species is unlikely to be limeted by temperature and its current distribution seems to be driven mainly by human activities. On the other hand the distribution of H.mantegazzianum in Czech Republic is significantly affected by the temperature in January as well as by human population density.
