By analysing their writings, the author shows how they perceived Bohemian statehood in relation to the Czech nation. He also focuses on the discussion of the role of religion within the state and analyses the idea of an elect nation used by the exiled Protestants. In doing so, he shows that various concepts of statehood and nationhood coexisted in these works. In conclusion, the article touches on the question of which elements of the early modern discourse of state and nation might have been acceptable for modern nationalism and which were overlooked.
