The comparison of reductive, thermal and charge transfer doping was discussed. Various techniques including voltammetry, Raman spectroscopy, tunneling and impedance spectroscopy have been utilized for in situ monitoring of the doping process, relative to the amount of charge exchanged. The XPS was employed for ex situ surface analysis. The changes in composition of surface and near-surface-located layers have been found to be responsible for significant variations in the course of both dark and photoassisted charge transfer processes including appearance of sub-bandgap photoeffects. The charge transfer reductive doping/oxidative de-doping is simple and well defined way for in situ tuning the carrier density, which allows modifying the anatase electrode performance.
