Překlad anotace The so-called borderland literature is usually characterised en bloc as explicitly nationalistic. However, the present analysis of three early borderland novels by Fritz Mauthner (Der letzte Deutsche von Blatna, 1887), Karl Wilhelm Fritsch (Um Michelburg, 1911) and Guido Glück (Der goldene Boden, 1912) reveals a less nationally polarised picture of the genre. The paper suggests that until the 1930s, borderland novels can be regarded as a relatively loose family, related more thematically than ideologically, which accordingly also shows strong fluctuations in terms of the radicality of the national self-image and the image of the other. The author concludes that I. all three novels construct a pre- or supranational horizon that is superordinate to the national particularisation of the novel world and is often also preferred, that II. the national self-identification of the novel protagonists is throughout negatively motivated, i.e. forced from the outside (Mauthner), exposed as a mark of decay (Glück) or marked as one option among many (Fritsch), and that III. as a result of the national particularisation of the fictional world, the characters ultimately have to 'recognise' or separate out considerable parts of what was previously their own as foreign.
