Překlad anotace This year marks the 90th anniversary of the discovery of the neutron in 1932 and the 80th anniversary of the start-up of the first nuclear reactor in the fall of 1942. The year 1932 was extraordinarily generous to nuclear physics, sometimes jokingly referred to as 'a great harvest of discoveries'. In addition to the discovery of the neutron, the American physicist Carl Anderson (1905-1991) was the first to observe the positron, the positively charged antiparticle of the electron, while studying cosmic rays. Also this year, John Cockcroft (1897-1967) and Ernest Walton (1903-1995) in the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge started the first linear proton accelerator and observed their interaction with lithium atomic nuclei. In the same year, Ernest Lawrence (1901-1958) and Merle Tuve (1901-1982) patented the cyclotron in the U.S. Nuclear physics thus took another major step from its pioneering form to its modern form.
