This topic remains pivotal even today, though the techniques, aims or backgrounds of the authors have gradually changed. Tamil writers have developed ingenious methods of dealing with social themes, including the adoption of first- person narrative modes, plot structure and a sense for physical and emotional details. The way the authors use the language has also changed significantly. Nowadays most of the writers use colloquial forms of language or local dialects in their works. It has become very popular and there are authors, such as Bama or Pugazh, who use a dialect not only in dialogues but throughout their work. A culmination of this trend can be seen in the emergence of regional literature (vaṭṭāra ilakkiyam). This literature brings together literary ingenuity, love for homeland, empathy with the local culture, as well as a deep knowledge of local flora and fauna. This combination can result in a lively and realistic picture of the Tamil countryside in which most of the works of vaṭṭāra ilakkiyam are set.
