Changes in development and composition of microbial communities can be a potential risk for many diseases, surprisingly including neurodegenerative illnesses. Bidirectional communication between central neural system and gastrointestinal system, called gut-brain axis, plays an important role in this phenomenon. Huntington disease is a hereditary neurodegeneration characterized by motor, cognitive, psychiatric changes, and metabolic dysfunction, e.g. weight loss. This review briefly discusses the gut-brain axis hypothesis and on example of HD gives short overview of possible involvement of gut microbiome in progress of neurodegenerations.
