The paper questions assumptions about the relationship between class formation, sustainability and patterns of consumption. I tis based upon analysis of qualitative and quantitative time-series research into food self-provisioning in Poland and the Czech Republic. The evidence of comparatively very high levels of food self-provisioning and sharing of the resulting produce amongst middle class Poles and Czech is provided, which shows that growing wealth may not mean less food self-provisioning.
