Effects of sound exposure for a period of 3 or 7 days on neuronal size was compared in the rat´s auditory cortex and the midbrain. A marked increase in neuronal size was found at the cortex (32%) and even larger effect in the midbrain (67%) in both the low and high frequency regions. Differential effects of sound exposure in the auditory centers might involve function of other structures as for example the descending auditory system.
