MSP from boar seminal plasma was sequenced and showed only 50–52% homology with that of human. Origin of porcine MSP in reproductive organs and the localization on spermatozoa are still unresolved. Although MSP has been described as a prostatic protein, we proved the presence of its mRNA transcripts not only in boar prostate, but also in other reproductive organs. These results were supported by immunoreaction with MSP antibody in fluids and extracts and by immunofluorescence (IMF) in secretory tissues of reproductive organs. Furthermore, IMF displayed the MSP occurrence on epididymal spermatozoa in the acrosomal region and also on the flagellum of ejaculated sperms. The function of MSP in seminal plasma and on spermatozoa is not fully understood. Nevertheless, the secretion of porcine MSP by different reproductive organs might indicate its multiple roles in the reproductive process.
