Charge transfer (CT) reactions between Ar+ ions and the sputtered analyte atoms occur at a much higher rate in analytical glow discharges (GD's) than in other similar plasmas, as follows from experimental Boltzmann plots of GD emission spectra and the spectra generated by an inductively coupled plasma. A simple model of a Grimm-type discharge suggests that these CT reactions occur at a higher rate in the cathode sheath than in the negative glow, due to a high collision rate between the sputtered analyte atoms and Ar+ ions accelerated in the cathode fall. This enhancement is, however, not sufficiently high to explain the anomalously high rates of those CT reactions, compared to other plasmas. Spatial inhomogeneity in the axial direction of Grimm-type GD plasma also means that Boltzmann plots of emission from this plasma cannot be interpreted in the conventional way. Further work is needed to explain the observed features of GD excitation, as reflected in the emission spectra.
