Areas situated along the contemporary border between China and Nepal are historically and culturally connected to the region of Tibet. Although they are citizens of Nepal, given through the landscape conditions and poor infrastructural development on the Nepali side as well as their shared language and cultural background and established livelihood ties with the territories in the north, up until the present day, the peoples inhabiting the Nepali side of the Himalayas depend on their connection with the Tibetan territory rather than on those with central Nepal. Although feeling affiliated to both sides, for various political, social and cultural reasons, these people certainly do not belong to China, but hold a particular position also within Nepali social structure. Their perception of identity reflects this existence between two different systems.
With China proceeding with its consolidation of border control and political pressure on one side and Nepal proceeding with infrastructural development on the other, the defined and felt identities of the Himalayan people shift and gain multiple layers.
