This was particularly the result of favourable international political circumstances, increasing activities of a progressive generation of ethnologists and also due to the institutional and paradigmatic establishment of comparative European ethnology, which overcame older self-centred approaches of national ethnological schools. Many of contemporary research plans have remained uncompleted, while others (mainly dedicated to the study of material culture and museology) resulted in outstanding scientific outputs dealing with transport, growing grains, cattle farming or annual fires. The paper critically looks at the organisation of research into the history of material culture in 1960s, in which Czech and Slovak researchers were involved, its results and an assessment of its benefit for the development of ethnology in Europe on the levels of empirical and methodological progress as well as of unique networking activities. Attention is also paid to personal and political/ideological limits of the time and rapid theoretical shifts which made it impossible to continue in this (or similar) projects in 1970s and later.
