We have investigated the adaptive potential of genomic traits (genome size, GC content and type of endoreplication) in orchids. The variability of genome size and GC-content closely associated with partial endoreplication, unique phenomenon among plants. In particular, GC content has been found to be incomparably diversified and sets new limits observed for both plants and eukaryotes. The observed variation in genomic traits was also linked to life-history traits such as plant growth form, climatic region or dormancy. We have corroborated the adaptive potential of genomic traits in orchids.
