In the presented publication, we compare daily energetic requirements of the studied visitor species in relation to diurnal changes in nectar quality and quantity. Our simplistic energetic model clearly shows the smaller carpenter bee competitively superior to larger sunbird especially
thanks to its smaller energy requirements and related ability to utilize smaller resources and in shorter time. Larger sunbird can reduce the asymmetry in exploitative competition by the use of resources in times when the smaller competitor is inactive, higher speed of nectar consumption
and aggressive attacks on carpenter bees. Our study is one of the very few publications reporting the competition among unrelated nectarivors from energetic point of view.
