The relation between the diversity of vascular plants, diurnal butterflies and several land-use, habitat and surrounding landscape factors was tested on 11 black coal soil heaps. The diversity of both vascular plants and diurnal lepidoptera was related to land-use and habitat factors representing early stages of succession, dry habitats and moderate disturbance. On the contrary, factors like covering with a fertile topsoil were associated with low diversity of both target groups of organisms. Factors associated with surrounding landscape did not reveal any effect. The results confirm the high conservation value of black coal heaps and management should be aimed at preserving open, dry and-or stress moderated habitat patches and promoting overal habitat heterogeneity.
