Anotace	Kniha podává základní informace o nejnižší skupině hinduistické kastovní hierarchie, dalitech, dříve "nedotýkatelných." Po tomto úvodu se soustřeďuje na jejich literaturu, která v maráthštině se rozvíjí od 60. let20. století, v hindštině a tamilštině začala později. Hlavní část knihy tvoří výbor z dalitské prózy a poezie. Dalitská literatura se vyznačuje zemitostí témat, hovorovostí a četnými dialektismy jazyka a nezájmem o tradiční estetická hlediska. Autoři jsou mnohdy nejen intelektuálové první generace, ale i první gramotní ve svých rodinách.Zejména v autobiografiích, oblíbeným dalitským žánrem, jim nejde tolik o vlastní zážitky, ale o postavení komunity dalitů. Jejich venkovská a městská bída a snahy o vzdělání a vzestup jsou ústředními tématy.
Překlad anotace	The book gives basic information about the lowest group of the Hindu caste hierarchy, the dalits, former "untouchables." After this introduction it concentrates on their literature, which has been developing from the 1960s of the 20. century onwards in Marathi, a little later in Hindi and Tamil. The main part of the book is an anthology of Dalit prose and poetry. Typical of Dalit literature is its down-to-earthiness, colloquial language with many dialecticisms and lack of interest in traditional esthetical principles. Most of its authors are not only first generation intellectuals, but even first literates in their respective families. Especially in autobiographies, favoured genre of the Dalit literature, they are not very particular about their respective experiences, but about the position of the Dalit community. The latter's situation, the country and urban poverty and striving for education and advancement are the central motifs of the Dalit literature.
