Circadian pacemaker within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) drives not only circadian rhythmicity but also directs the circadian organization of photoperiodic, i.e. seasonal, timekeeping. New data suggest that SCN "clock" genes may also function as "calendar" genes. Important questions remain regarding the SCN´s precise role in the brain photoperiodic circuits and the cellular and molecular mechanisms for its "photoperiodic" memory.
