    Pistia stratiotes is a shrub-like perennial or annual invasive plant, native to north and Central America. The plant is widely used in as for medicinal purposes in India, Nepal, Pakistan and Nigeria to treat numerous diseases such as skin problems, piles, gastric ulcer, menstrual pains, and wounds. This paper reviews the ethnomedicinal importance of P. stratiotes, as well as its proximate analysis, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, and potential toxicity/cytotoxicity. Published literature on P. stratiotes were sourced from data bases such as Google Scholar, Medicine, PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and SciFinder. From the literature it is found that P. stratiotes is used to cure wide array of ailments and is rich in many compounds and is potential toxic if used in high doses. Regardless of introduced or invasive nature of this plant, it is a valuable medicinal plant that can serve as promising source of potential medicinal herbal remedies for human beings. Further, plant from introduced or invasive ranges can be harvested and subjected for compound isolation or use in herbal medicine so that its invasiveness can be managed for human benefit.
