A broad zone of overlap between the two clades exists in Central and Western Europe, suggesting post-glacial contact with limited hybridisation. We conducted a population genetic study to test this indication that the two clades may represent distinct, reproductively isolated species. We analysed variation at two introns of nuclear genes, nine microsatellite loci, and mitochondrial DNA in hybrid populations from the Felchowsee and Dollnsee lakes in Germany. The study is based on the expectation that after hundreds of generations since the end of the last glaciation, a hybrid population will no longer show strong associations among alleles and genotypes from each clade if they are freely interbreeding. In contrast to this expectation, we find in both lakes significant linkage among the loci but also significant departures from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting the existence of barriers to merging of the two clades. The pattern was not concordant across all loci, however, and we will discuss the possible effects of other forces, including recent admixture and genetic drift.
