Brown adipose tissue represents a unique model system for demonstration of specific mechanisms participating in the transfer of reducing equivalents between mitochondrial dehydrogenases and coenzyme Q pool. Experimental data indicate that coenzyme Q binding protein is absent in the very active mitochondrial glycerol-3-phosphate enzyme complex. The absence of this protein could be responsible for the capacity of reactive oxygen substances (ROS) production by this enzyme. Glycerol-3-phosphate-dependent production of ROS could be responsible for the induction of apoptosis process and elimination of brown adipose tissue during postnatal development or after a period of hibernation.
