High surface area TiO2 nanotubes synthesized by alkali hydrothermal method, alumina and titania were used as a support for NiW hydrodesulphurization catalyst. Nickel salt of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (Ni3/2PW12O40) was applied as oxide precursor of the active components. A polytungstate phase evidenced by Raman spectroscopy was observed indicating the destruction of the initial heteropolyanion. Two times higher thiophene conversion was revealed on NiW catalyst supported on TiO2 nanotubes than those of catalysts supported on alumina and titania. Increased HDS activity of the NiW catalyst supported on TiO2 nanotubes could be related to both a higher amount of W oxysulfide entities in interaction with Ni2+ species observed with XPS analysis and to beneficial effect of titania nanotubes.
