Here we show that in freestanding, epitaxially grown magnetic shape memory Ni-Mn-Ga films a new and enhanced thermal actuation mode can be achieved not feasible in bulk materials. When cooling a ferromagnetic film through the critical temperature of martensitic instability, the avoidance of magnetostatic stray field energy favors orientations of the martensitic unit cell with their easy axis of magnetization aligned in the film plane. As this axis coincides with the short crystallographic axis, this results in a significant shrinkage of the lateral film area. This thermal actuation mode neither requires training nor an external magnetic field. It establishes a path to the realization of sub-micron miniaturized microactuators based on magnetic shape memory films.
