Current society depends on combustion processes and abandoning combustion as a source of energy altogether is currently not possible because of technological and economic factors and the transfer will take a lot of time. Meanwhile, if the CO2 emissions are to be reduced according to global agreements, it is necessary to apply post-combustion carbon capture technologies. Different solutions might be more suitable and more feasible for different applications and waste-to-energy is a very specific case. Firstly, it is the size of waste-to-energy plants that makes the problem specific. The size varies a lot and on average it is relatively small. Secondly, the content of carbon of biological origin reduces the percentage of CO2 that needs to be captured to achieve carbon neutrality. Thirdly, even though it is often forgotten, the original and main goal of waste-to-energy is to treat waste. Since it cannot be assumed that all waste will be recycled in the future, it can be expected that waste incineration will not be abandoned even after coal-fired power plants become obsolete. These three points show why it is suitable and important to focus on waste-to-energy plants in terms of post-combustion carbon capture. State-of-the-art solutions for post-combustion carbon capture are expensive and have to be, by the nature of the problem, energy demanding. It is, therefore, suitable to address various technological approaches. In this work, the focus is on membrane-based carbon capture. To compare individual technologies, it is necessary to optimize the processes to avoid misleading conclusions. However, the optimization of membrane-based post-combustion carbon capture is a complex problem and information on the performance of membrane modules is not always consistent.
