Cesium hafnium chloride of formula Cs2HfCl6 (CHC) was discovered as a scintillating material in 1984. Recently it was identified by Burger et al. as a promising scintillator for gamma spectroscopy. In the recent years, the search for suitable element composition of the A2MX6 structural type group with the best scintillating performance was conducted, however, there are few papers regarding the mechanism and temperature dependence of its intrinsic luminescence. The aim of this study is to analyze the temperature dependence of the CHC optical properties and mechanism of its intrinsic luminescence. Cleaved and polished single crystal samples prepared by the vertical Bridgman method were studied by the means of absorbance, radioluminescence, and photoluminescence emission, excitation and decay kinetics in the range of 8 – 500 K.
