The application of laser scanning technology is increasing recently in many different branches. Researchers from the Institute of Geonics are currently equipped with one of the sophisticated terrestrial laser scanners of modern time - Leica ScanStation C10. This paper presents an application of this technology in the mining environment. Attention is focused on unprecedented possibilities to apply this technology in mining practice, but also shows limitations in the wider use of this technology. Laser scanning excels in the ability to contactless determination of spatial coordinates of any spatial objects, such as buildings, structures, interiors, space, terrain, etc. This technology is characterized by exceptional speed, accuracy, complexity and safety. The scanned objects are then visualized using specialized software in the form of clouds of points. Subsequently it is possible to perform a wider range of analytical tasks and also generate models of these objects.
