Rocznice – zwłaszcza wielkich wydarzeń w życiu państw i narodów – należą do tych chwil, w których w szczególny sposób spotyka się pamięć historyczna z aktualną świadomością społeczną oraz sytuacją polityczną. Współczesne obchody rocznicowe nad Wełtawą i Wisłą dostarczyły również wielu dowodów w tym względzie, pokazując jednocześnie podobieństwa i różnice kultury politycznej w obu krajach. Dotyczy to także nowych wydarzeń historycznych rozgrywających się "na naszych oczach". Jako przykłady posłużyły tutaj uroczystości pogrzebowe prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej Lecha Kaczyńskiego i pierwszego prezydenta Republiki Czeskiej Václava Havla.

An anniversary – especially one celebrating a significant event in the life of a nation or state – is one of the moments in which the historic memory, social consciousness and political situation of the given era meet together in a singular fashion. The contemporary anniversary celebrations over the Vltava and the Vistula furnish abundant proof of this, as – at the same time – they also illustrate similarities and differences in the political cultures of both countries. This also pertains to current historic events that are taking place "before our eyes". The recent funeral celebrations for the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, and the first President of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel, may serve us as an example.
