Kolektivní monografie desetičlenného autorského týmu je výsledkem dlouhodobého zkoumání tzv. folklorního hnutí druhé poloviny 20. století v českých zemích, které bylo významným a zároveň rozporuplným kulturním i sociálním jevem. Má svůj původ v padesátých letech, kdy jsou zejména ve městech zakládány soubory lidových písní a tanců. Měly naplňovat představy ideologicky pojaté kultury, jejich konjunktura však zákonitě vyústila do „tíhy folkloru“ pociťované na přelomu let padesátých a šedesátých. Autoři zkoumali a analyzovali dostupné dobové prameny, média i literaturu, které vypovídaly o tehdejších oficiálních postojích a o požadavcích angažovanosti této oblasti volnočasové aktivity zvané jako zájmová umělecká činnost. Zároveň je zajímalo, jak vnímali tuto aktivitu přímí účastníci, tedy členové folklorních souborů, a co o ní prozradí jejich životní příběhy a vyprávění. Bylo folklorní hnutí nástrojem politické propagandy komunistického režimu, nebo šlo naopak o ostrůvky svobody lidské i umělecké, které se staly jakýmsi bezpečným místem pro realizaci vlastních strategií a alternativních myšlenek?

This collective monograph by a ten-member team of authors is the result of a long-term research of the so-called folklore movement of the second half of the 20th century, and although a number of works have already been written on the issue of folklore in the Czech lands, it is the first work to deal in such a comprehensive scope with this significant and contradictory phenomenon of the then Czechoslovakia, i.e. in all its cultural and especially social contexts. In their texts, the authors have captured many contrasting aspects of the cultural life of the former socialist society, and selected phenomena have been observed through the prism of their narrower disciplinary focus. The publication thus reflects an interdisciplinary approach from history through ethnology and socio-cultural anthropology to ethnomusicology and dance science. The authors have researched and analysed available contemporary sources, media and literature telling about the official attitudes of the time and about the demands of engagement in this leisure activity, which fell under the domain of so-called folk artistic creativity, later renamed hobby artistic activity. At the same time, they were interested in how the direct participants, i.e. members of folklore groups, perceived this activity and how they reflected it as part of their life stories. Was the folklore movement an instrument of political propaganda of the communist regime, or were they, on the contrary, islands of human and artistic freedom that became a kind of safe place for the realization of their own strategies and alternative ideas?
