Studie se soustředí na způsoby konstruování popisu a typické deskriptivní postupy užívané v prozaických textech Jana Nerudy. Jako výrazný a příznačný pro jeho autorskou poetiku vyhodnocuje model fyziognomického usuzování o vztahu podoby a povahy postavy. Jeho specifikem je silná autoritativnost a okázalost tohoto usuzování, jednak přizvání čtenáře v modu sdílení názoru. Děje se v pásmu vypravěče i postav a stává se tak obecným poznávacím postupem, poznamenaným gnozeologickým optimismem. Studie shledává dobové myšlenkové pozadí, které měly na utváření tohoto modelu podstatný vliv: Za prvé jím jsou dobově aktuálnější revize starších teorií fyziognomiky, jaké představují především názory Georga Christopha Lichtenberga a práce Alexandera Morisona věnovaná fyziognomii duševně nemocných. Druhý podnět vychází z dobové estetiky a teorie výtvarného umění v myšlení Victora Adalberta Svobody, které bylo základním podkladem Nerudovy umělecké kritiky. V ní se uplatňují obdobné postupy usuzování jako v jeho prozaické tvorbě. Na základě této perspektivy nabízí studie nové alternativní interpretaci některých Nerudových prozaických textů.

This study focuses on the typical descriptive techniques and methods for constructing descriptions used in the prose of Jan Neruda. It assesses physiognomic deduction, relating a character’s appearance to their nature as being substantial and characteristic for Neruda’s authorial poetics. One aspect specific to Neruda is the authoritativeness and showiness of this reasoning, as well as how the narrator invites the reader in a mode of sharing opinion. It takes place at the levels of both the narrator and the characters, thus becoming a general epistemic approach, impacted by gnoseological optimism. The study ascertains the aspects of the intellectual background of the 19th century that fundamentally influenced the shaping of this model: The first impulse here comes from the revisions – more relevant in Neruda’s era – to older theories of physiognomy, as primarily represented by the opinions of George Christoph Lichtenberg, mainly from the work of Alexander Morison concerning the physiognomy of the mentally ill. The second impulse comes from the aesthetic and the theory of the fine arts of mid-19th century in the thought of Victor Adalbert Svoboda, which was the basic foundation for Neruda’s art criticism. This criticism uses similar techniques of deduction as used in Neruda’s fiction. Based on this perspective, the study offers a new, alternative interpretation for certain of Neruda’s short stories.
