Accuracy of measurement and way of data evaluation are critical factors affecting credibility of data interpretation in all fields including cardiac cellular electrophysiology. Despite evident progress, some experimental approaches are routinely used without careful verification of their applicability at specific conditions. Derivative parameters (such as the current density related to the membrane capacitance) may be, under certain conditions, less favorable than the originally measured parameters (such as the membrane current alone). Statistical analysis of experimental data without validating the necessary conditions (e.g. normality of distribution) can also substantially distort conclusions. Dispersion of published experimental results exceeding natural biological variability may than lead to contradictory conclusions which is a serious problem if such data are used in various applications, for example in cellular mathematical models. The growing number of methodological approaches used in cardiac cellular electrophysiology and associated variability of experimental data strongly calls for introduction of new experimental strategies and new mathematical approaches allowing reduction of potential errors and biases of measured data.
