Kolektivní monografie nabízí interpretaci vybraných středověkých a raně novověkých textů středoevropského původu prizmatem problémů, jež do zjevnosti vyzvedla luterská reformace. Na prvním místě tu věnujeme pozornost slovu nadanému určitou mocí, ať již se jedná o slovo Boží (na kterém Luther svůj reformační projekt buduje), anebo o zmatená a potenciálně nebezpečná lidská slova. Úvodní studie mapuje působení slova v sakrální i sekulární textové sféře, a to především na základě ideologie novozákonní Jakubovy epištoly, jejíž zájem o moc jazyka dále aplikujeme při četbě staročeských rytířských eposů z tzv. Baworowského sborníku, Lutherových vlastních spisů a české i německé verze Historie doktora Johana Fausta. Na tomto základě stojí v druhé části knihy dvě série interpretačních sond. První z nich se soustředí na obrazy pekla a hrůzy z věčného zatracení (která motivuje Lutherovo vystoupení jako takové), ta druhá na literární a poetické obrazy ráje jakožto útočiště, k němuž se Luther obrací.

The collective monograph offers an interpretation of selected medieval and early modern Central European texts through the prism of the problems highlighted by Luther’s reformation. In the first place, the attention is paid to the phenomenon of the word embedded with power, be it the Word of God (on which Luther builds his reformation project) or a human word, usually misguided and potentially dangerous. The introduction maps effects of the word in the sacral as well as in the secular textual sphere, particularly in the biblical Epistle of James, the Old Czech chivalric epics collected in the Anthology of Count Baworowski, in Luther’s own writings and in the German and Czech prints of the first Faustbuch. On this foundation, two series of interpretative essays are built. The first one is focused on pictures of hell and the horror of eternal damnation, whence Luther’s motivation for public presentation of his theses stems, whereas the other five chapters focus on paradise as a sanctuary towards which the reformer turns his mind.
