King George of Poděbrady was convinced that terrestrial events are under influence of the planets and stars. Despite reproaches for astrological determinism, inadmissible curiosity and superstitiousness, natural as well as judicial astrology were widespread at the medieval universities and in court society. Astrological practice in the Bohemian kingdom can be tracked from the reign of Charles IV. Under the rule of Wenceslas IV, Havel of Strahov, Jan Ondřejův called Šindel and Christianus of Prachatice were active astronomers and perhaps astrologers. From the beginning of the 15th century, astrology and magic are documented at the court of Jagellonian dynasty. Propagation of astrological predictions were often mingled with apocalyptic prophecies, as the case of widespread Pronosticatio of Johannes Lichtenberger shows. The article deals also with partiality for astrology by George’s of Poděbrady contemporaries, Emperor Frederick III of Habsburg and King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary. Popularity of science of stars in Bohemia were significant in utraquistic as well as in catholic circles, but criticism on George’s partiality for astrology were more striking by his catholic opponent Hilarius of Litoměřice then by his utraquistic supporter Jan of Rokycany. George’s adviser Antonio Marini of Grenoble recommended geomancy to the king rather then numerically complicated astrology. The study focuses on interpretation of an anonymous historical horoscope of election of the time of George’s coronation, where a delay of putting down the crown on king’s head is documented. This delay could be caused by waiting for 11:00 local mean time, when Venus was approaching the climax, being positively aspected by Moon, whereas Jupiter in the sign of Lion was ascending, conjuncted with positive and „royal“ fixed star Regulus. Jupiter also positively aspected Mars and Saturn, that were traditionally considered to be harmful. Such election had to choose the most propitious moment for the opening of government. Therefore „the noblemen had to hold the crown in front of Him and the bishops had to wait with the sacred act“, as a contemporary observer recorded.
