Literárněhistorický komentář k vzájemné korespondenci Jakuba Demla a F. X. Šaldy mapuje vztah obou básníků od raného období před prvním osobním setkáním (z této doby jsou dochovány doklady o Demlově čtení Šaldových textů, případně o jejich reflexi v rozhovorech s básníkem Otokarem Březinou) přes další nepřímé doklady o jejich přátelství v korespondencích s jinými osobami až po období odcizení po publikaci Demlova Mého svědectví o Otokaru Březinovi (1931), následnou polemiku, ale i Demlovy návraty ke starým textům věnovaným příteli Šaldovi v dobách největšího přátelství. Komentář také doplňuje některá bílá místa korespondence, zejména dramatické okolnosti vydání Demlovy deníkové knihy Pro budoucí poutníky a poutnice (1913) a básníkova tragického vztahu s přítelkyní a mecenáškou Eliškou Wiesenbergerovou (1868–1918), v němž Šalda hrál roli nezištného přítele a ochránce.

A literary-historical commentary on the correspondence between Jakub Deml and F. X. Šalda maps the relationship between both poets from its beginnings, starting with the period that preceded their first meeting (there are contemporaneous extant reports in Demlʼs hand that testify to his familiarity with Šalda’s texts as well as to reflections on them in Demlʼs conversations with the poet Otokar Březina). The commentary looks at indirect evidence of the men’s friendship, found in their correspondence with others, and proceeds all the way to the period of their alienation after the publication of Deml’s My Testimony about Otokar Březina (1931) and the polemic that followed. From there it goes on to consider Deml’s later returns to the old texts he dedicated to his friend Šalda. The commentary also fills in certain gaps in the correspondence, especially the dramatic circumstances surrounding the publication of Deml’s diary-like For Future Pilgrims (1913) and the poet’s tragic relationship with his friend and patron Eliška Wiesenbergerová (1868–1918), in which Šalda played the role of a truly selfless friend and protector.
